A flat belt, also called a drive belt, is a transmission belt used for power transmission and power transmission. A special feature of a flat belt is its uniform and elastic surface, which, without elevations or thickness differences, guarantees that the belt has no weaknesses. The surface also ensures quiet operation, as it absorbs vibrations and noise. Flat belts allow very high speeds and are used, for example, by the textile, metal and wood industries as well as in roller conveyor and transport systems. Flat belts can transmit up to 97% tensile strength and guarantee a stable and high power transmission, as a flat belt can transmit power from both sides of the belt. Flat belts are made of durable rubber or plastic, with a reinforcement of either nylon, kevlar, steel or polyester. We sell a wide range of open and integral flat belts. Flat belts can be equipped with a surface coating of your choice, so that the belt is targeted at specific industries and transport purposes. We offer the surface coating in rubber, PVC, PU or foam, which can be applied to one or both sides of the belt. By coating a flat belt, you can adapt and target the belt for specific handling purposes and add properties to the belt in the form of e.g. high/low friction, hardness etc. Flat belts are available in lengths from 180–, 4,800 mm (rubber) and from 200 – 5,400 mm (plastic). Flat belts are sold in different thicknesses, ensuring different tensile strengths. The thicker the flat belt, the larger a pulley will need to be used in the belt drive.

Flat belt with mechanical joint

A flat belt can be delivered as an endless belt assembled in advance, so that the customer can assemble it on their machine themselves. In some cases, the structure of the machine may prevent an endless flat belt from being assembled, but this can be overcome by using mechanical assemblers. Mechanical assemblers are a simple and quick way to avoid long production stops or cases where physical circumstances prevent us from being able to use splice tools directly on the machine.

A welded joint is always preferable, as this is the absolute strongest joining method. Our customers often prefer a flat belt with a mechanical joint, as flat belts with mechanical joints can be easily and quickly installed on site by the customer themselves without the use of tools.

Open PU flat belt

PU flat belts are made of polyurethane, which has a strong abrasion resistance. The different types of cords in the belt ensure different tensile strength, regardless of the task. A layer of different coatings can be applied to the back to solve different tasks.

It is possible to join (weld) an open flat belt with a melting tool to an endless PU flat belt of the desired length. However, one should expect approx. 50% less tensile strength than an endless PU flat belt without a joint, also called a flex belt. Megalinear timing belts from Megadyne are produced with galvanized steel reinforcement.

These are also available with stainless steel reinforcement or Kevlar reinforcement (aramid). PU flat belts are temperature resistant from -20 ° C to +80 ° C.
