V-belts (V-belts): The practical guide to types, codes, selection and troubleshooting

V-belts are used everywhere – from lawnmowers and compressors to conveyor belts, ventilation systems and industrial machinery. Here you will find an easy and technically correct explanation of V-belt profiles, V-belt codes, uses and maintenance – so you can choose right the first time.

What is a V-belt – and why is it so widespread?

One V-belt (often called V-belt) is a drive belt with a trapezoidal cross-section that transfers power between two pulleys. The shape means that the belt “v-belts” into the pulley groove, giving you good traction without having to tighten extremely hard.

Typical applications

  • Agricultural machinery, lawn mowers and garden equipment
  • Conveyor belts, ventilation systems and fans
  • Compressors, pu and generators
  • Machines in production and workshops
  • Cars and light industrial equipment (depending on solution)

Why choose V-belts?

  • Robust and forgiving solution (tolerates small alignment errors)
  • Quiet and vibration-damping compared to chains
  • Many standard profiles – easy to obtain and replace
  • Good efficiency with correct clamping and alignment

Tip: When you need to order a new V-belt, it is profile + length + possible design, which is most important – not just “a belt that looks like it”.

How to choose the right V-belt (quick checklist)

1) Find the profile

The profile describes the shape and dimensions of the belt (e.g A 13×8 or SPA 13×10). You will often find the profile printed on the belt. Alternatively, you can measure the top width and height of the belt.

2) Find the right length

Length can be specified in several ways: Li (inside), Ld (effective/pitch) and Leave (external). If your belt is labeled as “800 Ld”, this is typically the effective length.

3) Consider operations and the environment

  • Load: High power often requires narrow profile (SP*) or multiple belts.
  • Temperature: heat/cold may require special quality.
  • Oil/dust/water: choose a solution that suits the environment.
  • Space: Limited space may favor narrow V-belts.

4) Check pulleys and alignment

A properly installed belt can still fail if the pulleys are worn, warped or misaligned. When in doubt, it is often worth checking the pulleys at the same time as changing the belt.

V-belt profiles and types

Classic V-belts (Z, A, B, C, D, E)

Classic V-belts are widely used and are used in everything from small machines to heavier operations. They are often chosen when a simple and standardized solution is desired.

V-belts (SPZ, SPA, SPB, SPC)

Narrow V-belts can transmit more power per width and are often used in modern industry and compact machines. They are a typical choice for high loads or when a more “efficient” belt pack is desired.

Cogged V-belts (XPZ, XPA, XPB, XPC)

Notched V-belts can often bend better around smaller pulleys and can run more stably at higher speeds. They are often used when you have small pulleys or high gear ratios.

Example of V-belts in operation on pulleys. Correct profile, alignment and belt tension are crucial for longevity and performance.

If you are in doubt about profile selection: start by reading the marking on the old belt or measure the top width and height of the belt. You can also find more variants and categories at v-belts.

V-belt codes explained: What does “SPA 800 Ld” mean?

A V-belt code typically tells profile + length + (sometimes) length typeWhen you can read the code, it is much easier to order correctly – especially when there are several “ways” to specify length.

Example

  1. SPA = profile (narrow V-belt). Read about SPA profiles
  2. 800 = length in millimeters
  3. Ld = effective length (pitch length) – measured at the belt's tension zone

Li, Ld and La – briefly explained

DesignationWhat does that mean? When do you use it?
Li Internal length Often seen on certain classic belts and older designations
Ld Effective/pitch length Very common on narrow V-belts (SP*) and when sizing
Leave External length Used in some places for quick identification

Note: The same physical belt can be described as Li/Ld/La depending on the standard and manufacturer. Therefore, conversion is useful.

V-belts, timing belts and chains: What's the difference?

V-belt (V-belt)

  • Good for power transfer and “forgiving” operation
  • May have a little slippage during peak load
  • Quiet and easy to service

Timing belt

  • Synchronous operation without slip (teeth meshing)
  • Good when timing/position is critical
  • Typically requires more precise setup

Chain

  • Very high load capacity
  • Typically requires lubrication and more maintenance
  • Can be noisier and cause more vibration

V-belts vs. flat belts: Why do many people choose V-belts?

Boats v-belts and flat belts can transmit power, but in practice, V-belts are often chosen because they provide better grip on the pulley and can transmit more power in less space.

  • Higher power transfer via the wedge effect in the groove
  • High efficiency with correct alignment and tension
  • Less maintenance than many chain drives (no lubrication)
  • Good tolerance against small errors in adjustment

Calculate length and convert (Li/Ld/La)

If you have a length in e.g. Li, but need to order in Ld (or vice versa), then a converter is the fastest way. You can use our calculator here: V-belt length calculator & converter.

Practical tip: If you have the opportunity, reading the marking on the old belt is almost always the safest thing to do. If it is worn out, we can often get a good deal with profile + length type + measurements.

Troubleshooting: is the belt slipping, squeaking or getting hot?

Typical symptoms – and what they often mean

SymptomTypical causeQuick solution
The belt squeaks when starting Too loose belt, oil on pulleys, or worn belt Clean, check tension, replace belt if worn
The belt slips under load Too low tension, incorrect profile, worn discs Adjust tension, check profile, inspect discs
The belt gets very hot Loose, misaligned or too tight a tension Check alignment and tension
Uneven wear on the side Sheaves not aligned / skewed pulley Correct alignment, check bearings and discs

Sliding V-belts on lawn mowers (step-by-step)

  1. Turn off the machine and make it safe to work on.
  2. Check the belt for ctiming bars, glazing (shiny surfaces) or peeling – replace if worn.
  3. Check pulleys for rust, sharp edges or wear in the groove.
  4. Check the belt tension: too loose a belt will slip, too tight a belt will wear out the bearings and belt.
  5. Check alignment (pulleys must be aligned) and that the belt is correctly positioned in the groove.
  6. Test again under load.

Do not use “belt spray” as a permanent solution. It may mask the problem, but rarely solves the cause (tension, pulleys or oil).

Life expectancy of V-belts – and why they fail

The lifespan depends on quality, operation, environment and maintenance. As a rule of thumb:

  • Industry: often several years with correct clamping and clean discs.
  • Agriculture: typically several seasons – but the environment and stop/start can be tough.
  • Car/equipment: depends on the system and manufacturer's intervals.

The most common causes of V-belt failures

  • Wear and tear (natural aging, ctiming bars, glazing)
  • Overload or slices too small for the profile
  • Incorrect belt tension (too loose or too tight)
  • Poor alignment (discs do not align)
  • Oil, chemicals, water and dirt in the operating area
  • Worn pulleys (incorrect groove profile results in poor contact)

Oil and temperature: how it affects the belt

Oil impact

Oil can break down the rubber compound and reduce friction – often resulting in slippage and faster wear. Keep the area clean and choose oil-resistant quality if there is a risk of oil spillage.

Temperature influence

High heat can accelerate aging, and frost can stiffen the material. In extreme environments, a belt type specified for the temperature range should be selected.

Power transmission occurs primarily through contact of the sides of the belt against the sides of the pulley – therefore profile and groove geometry are crucial.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about V-belts

What is the difference between a classic V-belt and a narrow V-belt?

Classic V-belts (Z/A/B/C/D) are the “traditional” standard. Narrow V-belts (SPZ/SPA/SPB/SPC) can transmit more power per width and are often used in modern, compact transmissions.

Can I just choose the same length if the profile fits?

Not always. The length specification can be Li/Ld/La. Make sure to match both profile and length type – or use a converter.

Should I lubricate the V-belt?

Normally no. V-belts work by friction on the sides of the groove. Lubrication can increase slip and cause faster wear. Instead, keep the pulleys and belt clean and dry.

Why does the belt snap again quickly after replacement?

The most common causes are: incorrect profile, too tight/loose tension, misaligned pulleys, or worn pulleys/bearings.
