Description

Conti Synchroflex AT10 1860 – compact timing belt for precise motion transmission

With 186 teeth spread over a pitch length of 1860 mm, the Conti Synchroflex AT10 1860 is designed for precise transmission of rotation, timing and position. The belt is cast endlessly in PU and has integrated steel cord tension elements that stabilize the length during normal operation. The nominal tooth pitch is 10 mm and the tooth profile must match the profile of the pulleys exactly. It is not sufficient for another belt to have approximately the same length or width. This is the standard version in the specified profile. It must not be confused with a possible GEN III version or a double-sided DL belt with the same pitch length.

Product data and fixed targets

  • Pitch length: 1860 mm
  • Number of teeth: 186
  • Tooth profile: AT10
  • Tooth pitch: 10 mm
  • Material: cast polyurethane with steel cord
  • Brand: Conti Synchroflex

These specifications can be used as a check against the marking on the old belt or against the machine's spare parts list. The pitch length is not necessarily the same as a measurement across the outside of the belt, and the number of teeth is therefore often the safest additional check. If in doubt, both the belt and timing belt pulleys should be examined before ordering a replacement.

Function of the tooth profile

In a synchronous belt drive, the movement is transmitted through the tooth flanks. The geometry of the AT profile is therefore crucial for both load distribution, noise level and position accuracy. A correct AT pulley supports the teeth according to the profile to which they are cast. If the pulley's tooth shape or pitch deviates, the load can be concentrated at a few pu and cause abnormal wear, even though the belt can apparently be mounted.

Materials and endless manufacturing

The belt body consists of wear-resistant polyurethane, which encloses high-strength steel cord. The materials each have their own function: PU forms the teeth and protects the belt against mechanical wear, while the cord tensioning elements provide high longitudinal stiffness and limit post-elongation. Continental describes the design as maintenance-friendly and lubrication-free. This does not mean that the drive can be ignored; pulleys, alignment and pretension should still be checked.

What does the version designation mean?

This item is a single-sided standard design. The teeth are located on the inside of the belt, while the back is smooth. It should not be confused with a double-sided DL version or the red GEN III series. If the machine is originally dimensioned for a specific variant, a change should only be made after a technical assessment of load, pulleys and preload.

Checking when replacing

It is not enough to compare the total circumference of a belt. The correct replacement must have the same pitch, tooth profile and number of teeth as the existing drive. The width must match the pulleys and the required capacity, and a DL or GEN III version must be identified separately. If in doubt, pictures of the marking, tooth profile and pulleys can be used as a supplement, but a documented spare part designation is best.

Areas of application

Continental cites construction machinery, pu , paper machines, compressors, compactors, textile machines and roller conveyor drives as examples for this profile family. The examples describe the profile's general area of application, but do not constitute an approval for any specific installation. The final belt width and pretension must be selected based on the transmitted torque, starting and shock loads, operating time, pulley sizes, speed and the number of teeth in simultaneous engagement. For safety-critical or heavily loaded drives, an actual calculation should be made.

Choosing belt width

The belt width is not written in the product name because the same pitch length is collected on one product page. The starting pu is 16 mm. Integer widths from 16 to 50 mm can be selected on this product page. The original supplier widths for this length are 16, 20, 25, 32 and 50 mm. Other intermediate sizes are offered as cut-to-sizes of the same type of timing belt sleeve when they are within the selection shown. The number of teeth, pitch length and profile do not change when the width is changed.

Disc geometry and tooth engagement

The pulleys and belt should be considered as a single tooth engagement. Correct AT10 geometry ensures that the load is distributed over the tooth flanks rather than concentrated on tooth tips or edges. The drive ratio is selected by the number of teeth on the pulleys, while the belt's 186 teeth and 1860 mm pitch length determine the required combination of pulleys and center distance. When changing the drive, the geometry should be calculated.

How to avoid unnecessary wear and tear

Proper installation begins with clean, undamaged pulleys with the correct profile. Teeth and grooves should be checked for deposits, bars and wear before the new belt is fitted. The pretension should be based on the drive's calculation and should not be selected based on a random hand feel. After the initial run-in, it is a good idea to check grooveing, noise, temperature and whether the belt runs centrally.

Operating environment and maintenance

The standard material is specified for ambient temperatures from -30 °C to +80 °C. Applications close to the limits, especially below -10 °C or above +50 °C, may require special dimensioning. The timing belt operates without lubrication, and oil or grease should therefore not be added to dampen noise. The polyurethane is described as resistant to aging as well as simple oils, grease and petrol and to certain acids and bases. In the case of permanent contact, cleaning chemicals or unknown media, material compatibility should be specifically clarified.

Prevention of early belt damage

Troubleshooting should start with pu location of the damage. Edge wear is typically associated with grooveing and alignment, while tooth skipping can be associated with too low tension, load peaks or too few teeth in mesh. Ctiming bars on the back can be caused by too small rollers, back bending or environmental influences. Do not simply replace the belt without also finding the mechanical cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Conti Synchroflex AT10 1860 welded?

No. The Conti Synchroflex series is manufactured as cast, endless timing belts. The belt therefore does not have a welded joint around the circumference. The cast process provides a uniform tooth pitch around the entire belt and a strong bond between the polyurethane and the cast steel cord tension elements.

Conti Synchroflex AT10 1860: what temperature can the belt work at?

The standard version is specified for ambient temperatures from -30 °C to +80 °C. At temperatures below -10 °C or above +50 °C, adapted sizing may be required.

Conti Synchroflex AT10 1860: how does preload affect operation?

Correct pretension keeps the teeth in stable engagement and reduces the risk of tooth jump. Too low a tension can cause impact and jump under load, while too high a tension increases the load on the cord, pulleys and bearings. The correct value must be determined based on the drive's dimensioning.

Conti Synchroflex AT10 1860: why can a timing belt make noise?

Noise can be caused by incorrect pretension, skewed pulleys, poor tooth profile compatibility, excessive speed, resonance or worn tooth grooves. Lubrication is not the solution. First check alignment, tension, pulley condition and whether the belt runs without abnormal side contact.

Conti Synchroflex AT10 1860: can this belt be used at high rpm?

The Conti Synchroflex series is designed for precise and fast synchronous drives, but the permissible speed depends on the profile, pulley diameter, belt width, load and peripheral speed. A high speed must therefore not be approved based on the product name alone; the drive must be calculated.

Conti Synchroflex AT10 1860: can the belt be used for precise positioning?

The tooth engagement provides a positive, synchronous transmission without the normal slippage of a friction belt. This makes the profile relevant for positioning tasks, but the achievable accuracy also depends on the quality of the pulleys, shaft play, belt pretension, load and the overall machine design.

Conti Synchroflex AT10 1860: does the number of teeth change when the belt width is changed?

No. All width choices on this product page have the same pitch length of 1860 mm and the same number of teeth of 186. Only the width of the belt, and thus the price and possible load capacity, changes. The width must still match the pulleys and the technical dimensioning.

Conti Synchroflex AT10 1860: what is the difference between AT10 and a GEN III belt?

This product is the standard version. GEN III is a separate reinforced series with red high-performance PU and denser, two-filament steel cord. The same profile and length therefore do not mean that the products are identical.

The most important thing about this size

The product brings together the specified AT10 profile and length on one side, so that the appropriate width can be selected without creating a separate item for each cut. The main technical data is 1860 mm pitch length and 186 teeth. If in doubt about load or pulley compatibility, the drive should be calculated before ordering the belt.
