Syncroflex GEN III AT20 timing belt

Description

Conti Synchroflex AT20 GEN III 1000 – durable PU timing belt with stable tooth pitch

With 50 teeth distributed over a pitch length of 1000 mm, the Conti Synchroflex AT20 GEN III 1000 is designed for precise transmission of rotation, stroke and position. The belt is cast endlessly in PU and has integrated steel cord tension elements that stabilize the length during normal operation. The nominal tooth pitch is 20 mm and the tooth profile must match the profile of the pulleys precisely. It is not sufficient for another belt to have approximately the same length or width. The GEN III version is the reinforced high-performance construction with red high-performance polyurethane and denser, two-filament steel cord. It should therefore be treated as a separate product series and not as the usual standard version.

Key technical data

  • Pitch length: 1000 mm
  • Number of teeth: 50
  • Tooth profile: AT20 GEN III
  • Tooth pitch: 20 mm
  • Material: cast polyurethane with steel cord
  • Brand: Conti Synchroflex

These specifications can be used as a check against the marking on the old belt or against the machine's spare parts list. The pitch length is not necessarily the same as a measurement across the outside of the belt, and the number of teeth is therefore often the safest additional check. If in doubt, both the belt and timing belt pulleys should be examined before ordering a replacement.

Function of the tooth profile

The AT profile has been further developed from the classic T profile. The larger tooth volume provides a higher tooth shear strength, and the profile is designed for a favorable tooth engagement with reduced engagement shocks. This makes the AT series suitable when a drive must be compact and at the same time transmit motion precisely. Continental states that the AT profile can perform up to 50% more than a corresponding T profile, but the actual capacity always depends on width, discs, speed and load profile.

PU body and longitudinally stable traction elements

With the cast manufacturing method, the finished belt becomes an exact copy of a precision-machined shape. This is a major reason for the uniform tooth pitch and reproducible length. The steel cord is integrated into the polyurethane and contributes to position and angular precision. The design is suitable for synchronous drives, where a conventional elastic friction belt does not provide the desired repeatability.

The construction behind this variant

GEN III is the reinforced high-performance version of the Conti Synchroflex series. The construction uses red high-performance polyurethane, more densely packed steel cord tension elements and a two-filament construction with balanced S and Z cords. Continental states up to 25% higher power transmission than the corresponding AT or ATP standard series. GEN III can use the standard profile timing belt pulleys, but the belt still needs to be dimensioned for the specific drive.

Relevant machine tasks

The application examples in the catalogue include heavy-duty drives, textile machines, printing machines, machine tools and larger industrial power transmissions. This shows that the profile can be used in both power transmission and motion control. However, the specific belt must only be finally selected when the machine's torque, speed, center distance and pulley geometry are known. When simply replacing a spare part, the safest method is usually to copy the documented profile, length, design and width.

How the width variants work

The basic price applies to 16 mm, and the other widths are calculated with the same percentage logic as the existing PU timing belts in the webshop. Integer widths from 16 to 50 mm can be selected on this product page. A width of twice the basic width therefore costs 100% more, while a width of one and a half times the basic width gives approximately a 50% surcharge. This price rule is a webshop calculation; it does not replace a technical dimensioning of the belt's load-bearing capacity.

Selection of discs for the profile

The tooth profile of the timing belt pulleys must correspond to the AT20 GEN III of the belt, and their pitch must be 20 mm. The transmission ratio is determined by the ratio of the number of teeth of the pulleys, not by the width of the belt. A larger pulley usually reduces the bending load, while a very small pulley gives more bending per revolution. The angle of engagement and the number of teeth in mesh must be sufficient for the current load.

Correct splice in the timing belt tensioner

The belt must be able to be placed on the pulleys without force. If it can only be mounted by forcing it over a flange, the center distance or mounting procedure is incorrect. The pulley shafts must be aligned and the flanges must be smooth and undamaged. In the case of multi-shaft or counter-bent drives, the diameter and position of the rollers must be assessed separately. Correct pretensioning reduces the risk of tooth skipping without unnecessarily loading the bearings.

How to identify the correct replacement belt

When replacing a spare part, the marking on the existing belt should be compared with the product name. Check the profile designation, pitch length, number of teeth, design and width. If the text on the belt has worn away, the number of teeth can be counted and the pitch can be assessed by measuring over several teeth. A single external length measurement is less reliable because the nominal length of the timing belt is indicated in the pitch line.

What does belt wear indicate?

Troubleshooting should start with pu location of the damage. Edge wear is typically associated with grooveing and alignment, while tooth skipping can be associated with too low tension, load peaks or too few teeth in mesh. Ctiming bars on the back can be caused by too small rollers, back bending or environmental influences. Do not simply replace the belt without also finding the mechanical cause.

Operating conditions of PU timing belt

Continental specifies a temperature range of up to +100 °C for the GEN III series. When operating close to the temperature limits, the drive must still be dimensioned according to the specific load and environmental conditions. The timing belt operates without lubrication, and oil or grease should therefore not be added to dampen noise. The polyurethane is described as resistant to aging as well as simple oils, grease and petrol and to certain acids and bases. In the case of permanent contact, cleaning chemicals or unknown media, material compatibility should be specifically clarified.

Practical questions before ordering

Conti Synchroflex AT20 GEN III 1000: does the number of teeth change when the belt width is changed?

No. All width choices on this product page have the same pitch length of 1000 mm and the same number of teeth of 50. Only the width of the belt, and thus the price and possible load capacity, changes. The width must still match the pulleys and the technical dimensioning.

Conti Synchroflex AT20 GEN III 1000: does this PU timing belt need to be lubricated?

No. The timing belt is designed for lubrication-free operation. Oil or grease should not be added to reduce noise as this may mask an alignment, pretension or worn pulley problem. Instead, keep the tooth mesh clean and check the cause of any abnormal noise.

Conti Synchroflex AT20 GEN III 1000: can this belt be used at high rpm?

The Conti Synchroflex series is designed for precise and fast synchronous drives, but the permissible speed depends on the profile, pulley diameter, belt width, load and peripheral speed. A high speed must therefore not be approved based on the product name alone; the drive must be calculated.

Conti Synchroflex AT20 GEN III 1000: can a wider belt always transmit twice as much?

Not necessarily. A larger width provides a more active belt cross-section and can increase the permissible load, but the drive capacity also depends on the profile, number of teeth in mesh, pulley size, speed, load factor and preload. The width should be selected by an overall calculation.

Conti Synchroflex AT20 GEN III 1000: how best to store a spare timing belt?

Store the belt in a dry, clean place away from direct sunlight, ozone, strong heat or chemical fumes. It should be free from sharp bends and without heavy loads on top. Avoid hanging a small belt over a sharp hook as this can cause local deformation.

Is the Conti Synchroflex AT20 GEN III 1000 welded?

No. The Conti Synchroflex series is manufactured as cast, endless timing belts. The belt therefore does not have a welded joint around the circumference. The cast process provides a uniform tooth pitch around the entire belt and a strong bond between the polyurethane and the cast steel cord tension elements.

Conti Synchroflex AT20 GEN III 1000: why is GEN III not merged with the standard version?

GEN III has a different material construction and capacity data than the standard belt. The higher cord density, two-filament construction and high-performance polyurethane make it a separate product line, even though the pitch length and tooth profile may be identical.

The most important thing about this size

Conti Synchroflex AT20 GEN III 1000 is the correct size when the drive requires AT20 GEN III, 1000 mm pitch length and 50 teeth. The belt is cast endless in PU with steel cord and must be used with timing belt pulleys that match the profile. Choose the width according to the technical load and always check the design, alignment and pretension before commissioning.
