The Conti Synchroflex AT5 GEN III 720 combines a precise AT5 GEN III tooth geometry with a molded polyurethane body and longitudinally stable steel cord tension elements. The product has 144 teeth and a 720 mm pitch length, which corresponds to a tooth pitch of 5 mm. The belt is used in synchronous drives where uniform movement and reproducible position are more important than the elasticity normally associated with a conventional V-belt or flat belt. The GEN III version is the reinforced high-performance construction with red high-performance polyurethane and a denser, two-filament steel cord structure. It should therefore be treated as a separate product series and not as the usual standard version.
The list gathers the information normally used to identify a timing belt: nominal length, number of teeth, profile, material and make. It is important to read all the information together. Two belts can have the same pitch length but be incompatible if the tooth profile or tooth pitch is different. Conversely, a different width does not change the number of teeth as long as the profile and pitch length are the same.
The metric AT geometry has trapezoidal teeth with a larger tooth volume than the standard T profile. The purpose is to distribute the load advantageously in the tooth mesh and achieve higher tooth strength without making the drive unnecessarily large. The profile requires suitable AT timing belt pulleys with the same pitch; a visual similarity to other profiles is not evidence of compatibility.
Conti Synchroflex is manufactured by casting, where the polyurethane is precisely shaped to the tool's tooth geometry around the embedded steel cord tension elements. The casting process provides high pitch accuracy over the entire circumference of the belt and a strong connection between PU and cord. The finished timing belt is endless and therefore has no welded joints. The polyurethane provides a wear-resistant tooth and back surface, while the steel cord takes the longitudinal tensile load.
In the GEN III series, both the polyurethane and the tension body are optimized for higher performance. The tighter cord packing can increase the permissible tensile load, and the balanced two-filament construction is designed to reduce flange friction and improve belt running. Continental states that existing standard AT or ATP pulleys can be used with the corresponding GEN III profile. However, the remaining dimensioning of the drive still needs to be checked.
The profile series is used in practice for tasks such as machine tools, pu , textile machines and positioning and conveying systems. Common to these machines is the need for a fixed transmission ratio and controlled tooth engagement. A timing belt can transmit both force and position, but the capacity cannot be assessed based on length alone. Width, profile version, wrap angle and load cycle are among the data that must be included in the selection.
The basic price applies to 6 mm, and the other widths are calculated with the same percentage logic as the existing PU timing belts in the webshop. Integer widths from 6 to 50 mm can be selected on this product page. A width of twice the basic width therefore costs 100% more, while a width of one and a half times the basic width gives approximately 50% extra. This price rule is a webshop calculation; it does not replace a technical dimensioning of the belt's load-bearing capacity.
A belt with the correct length can still function poorly if the pulleys have the wrong profile, are worn or are misaligned. Therefore, check the tooth grooves, flanges, shaft alignment and the number of teeth on the pulleys. For AT5 GEN III, the nominal tooth pitch is 5 mm. The fixed tooth mesh makes the gear ratio reproducible, but only when the belt has sufficient wrap and does not run with constant side pressure.
The timing belt pulleys must be parallel and in the same plane. Even minor misalignments can cause the belt to move towards a flange and cause edge or cord damage. The belt should be installed without being twisted, sharply bent or pressed over a flange with a tool. The center distance is adjusted to achieve the calculated preload. Too high a tension increases the bearing and cord load, while too low a tension can cause tooth jumps at load peaks.
When replacing a spare part, the marking on the existing belt should be compared with the product name. Check the profile designation, pitch length, number of teeth, design and width. If the text on the belt has worn away, the number of teeth can be counted and the pitch can be assessed by measuring over several teeth. A single external length measurement is less reliable because the nominal length of the timing belt is indicated in the pitch line.
Troubleshooting should start with pu location of the damage. Edge wear is typically associated with grooveing and alignment, while tooth skipping can be associated with too low tension, load peaks or too few teeth in mesh. Ctiming bars on the back can be caused by too small rollers, back bending or environmental influences. Do not simply replace the belt without also finding the mechanical cause.
Continental specifies a temperature range of up to +100 °C for the GEN III series. When operating close to the temperature limits, the drive must still be dimensioned according to the specific load and environmental conditions. The cast PU belt is maintenance-friendly and does not require lubricant. Regular visual inspection is still relevant: look for ctiming bars, frayed edges, shiny tooth flanks, foreign body impressions and abnormal side contact. Sudden changes in noise or grooveing can be signs of misalignment, too low tension or worn pulleys.
Noise can be caused by incorrect pretension, skewed pulleys, poor tooth profile compatibility, excessive speed, resonance or worn tooth grooves. Lubrication is not the solution. First check alignment, tension, pulley condition and whether the belt runs without abnormal side contact.
The belt has 144 teeth. The number of teeth is calculated by dividing the pitch length of 720 mm by the tooth pitch of 5 mm. The result is 144, and this number can be used as an additional check when identifying an existing belt. A different number of teeth means a different pitch length.
This product is already GEN III. The reinforced version features high-performance PU and denser, two-filament steel cord construction and is a separate product line from the standard belt.
The Conti Synchroflex series is designed for precise and fast synchronous drives, but the permissible speed depends on the profile, pulley diameter, belt width, load and peripheral speed. A high speed must therefore not be approved based on the product name alone; the drive must be calculated.
Store the belt in a dry, clean place away from direct sunlight, ozone, strong heat or chemical fumes. It should be free from sharp bends and without heavy loads on top. Avoid hanging a small belt over a sharp hook as this can cause local deformation.
Continental states that the GEN III version can be used on standard timing belt pulleys for the corresponding AT5 profile. However, the pulleys must be in good condition and the drive must be dimensioned for the load you want to utilize.
This should be avoided. The belt should be installed by adjusting the center distance or following the correct installation procedure for the machine. Forcing it over a flange can damage the cord pullers, teeth or belt edge. After installation, the pulleys must be parallel and the pretension must be correct.
The documented supplier widths for this size include 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25, 32 and 50 mm. The product page may also show intermediate sizes as cut widths when they are within the allowed range. This does not change the tooth profile or length, but the price is calculated based on the base width.
Conti Synchroflex AT5 GEN III 720 is the correct size when the drive requires AT5 GEN III, 720 mm pitch length and 144 teeth. The belt is cast endless in PU with steel cord and must be used with timing belt pulleys that match the profile. Choose the width according to the technical load and always check the design, alignment and pretension before commissioning.
