Description

Conti Synchroflex T2.5 160 – precise T-profile timing belt in cast polyurethane

Conti Synchroflex T2.5 160 is an endless, cast polyurethane timing belt with 64 teeth, 2.5 mm tooth pitch and a pitch length of 160 mm. It is intended for synchronous power transmission, where the driving and driven shafts must follow a fixed tooth ratio without the slippage known from friction-based belt drives. The pitch length is the nominal length measurement in the belt's cord line and is therefore the measurement that must be compared with the existing belt, the machine's spare part data and the installed timing belt pulleys. This is the standard version in the specified profile. It must not be confused with a possible GEN III version or a double-sided DL belt with the same pitch length.

Dimensions, profile and number of teeth

  • Pitch length: 160 mm
  • Number of teeth: 64
  • Tooth profile: T2.5
  • Tooth pitch: 2.5 mm
  • Material: cast polyurethane with steel cord
  • Brand: Conti Synchroflex

The technical data below describes the part of the product that does not change when a different belt width is selected. Pitch length, tooth pitch and number of teeth remain identical for all width choices. However, the width affects the available belt cross-section width and the price calculated on the product page. Correct sizing must always take into account torque, speed, number of teeth in mesh, pulley diameters, service factor and any counter-bending.

Profile, tooth pitch and engagement

The trapezoidal T-geometry is a standardized solution for synchronous transmission. The teeth mesh with corresponding grooves in the timing belt pulley, so that the speed ratio is maintained without slipping. The correct pitch is crucial: a T5 belt, for example, will not fit in an AT5 pulley simply because the tooth pitch is 5 mm in both places. The shape and clearance of the tooth flanks are different.

Cast polyurethane and steel cord

The belt body consists of wear-resistant polyurethane, which encloses high-strength steel cord. The materials each have their own function: PU forms the teeth and protects the belt against mechanical wear, while the cord tensioning elements provide high longitudinal stiffness and limit post-elongation. Continental describes the design as maintenance-friendly and lubrication-free. This does not mean that the drive can be ignored; pulleys, alignment and pretension should still be checked.

The construction behind this variant

This item is a single-sided standard design. The teeth are located on the inside of the belt, while the back is smooth. It should not be confused with a double-sided DL version or the red GEN III series. If the machine is originally dimensioned for a specific variant, a change should only be made after a technical assessment of load, pulleys and preload.

The belt width is selected on the product page

The belt width is not written in the product name because the same pitch length is collected on one product page. The starting pu is 4 mm. Integer widths from 4 to 50 mm can be selected on this product page. The original supplier widths for this length are 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm. Other intermediate sizes are offered as cut-to-size versions of the same type of timing belt sleeve when they are within the selection shown. The number of teeth, pitch length and profile do not change when the width is changed.

Typical applications and sizing

The application examples in the catalogue include precision mechanics, positioning drives, small synchronous machine movements and measuring and control equipment. This shows that the profile can be used in both power transmission and motion control. However, the specific belt must only be finally selected when the machine's torque, speed, center distance and pulley geometry are known. When simply replacing a spare part, the safest method is usually to copy the documented profile, length, design and width.

Compare with the existing belt

It is not enough to compare the total circumference of a belt. The correct replacement must have the same pitch, tooth profile and number of teeth as the existing drive. The width must match the pulleys and the required capacity, and a DL or GEN III version must be identified separately. If in doubt, pictures of the marking, tooth profile and pulleys can be used as a supplement, but a documented spare part designation is best.

Selection of discs for the profile

A belt of the correct length can still function poorly if the pulleys have the wrong profile, are worn or are misaligned. Therefore, check the tooth grooves, flanges, shaft alignment and the number of teeth on the pulleys. For T2.5, the nominal tooth pitch is 2.5 mm. The fixed tooth mesh makes the gear ratio reproducible, but only when the belt has sufficient wrap and does not run with constant side pressure.

How to avoid unnecessary wear and tear

The belt must be able to be placed on the pulleys without force. If it can only be mounted by forcing it over a flange, the center distance or mounting procedure is incorrect. The pulley shafts must be aligned and the flanges must be smooth and undamaged. In the case of multi-shaft or counter-bent drives, the diameter and position of the rollers must be assessed separately. Correct pretensioning reduces the risk of tooth skipping without unnecessarily loading the bearings.

Checking teeth, back and edges

Early damage is often caused by conditions surrounding the belt rather than the material itself. Bent shafts, worn tooth grooves, foreign objects and incorrect pretensioning can all shorten the service life. In the event of a belt break, the pulleys should therefore be cleaned and inspected before the new belt is fitted. Also check whether load conditions or start-stop cycles have changed since the original design.

Maintenance-free does not mean control-free

The standard material is specified for ambient temperatures from -30 °C to +80 °C. Applications close to the limits, especially below -10 °C or above +50 °C, may require special sizing. The molded PU belt is maintenance-friendly and does not require lubricant. Regular visual inspection is still relevant: look for ctiming bars, frayed edges, shiny tooth flanks, foreign body impressions and abnormal side contact. Sudden changes in noise or grooveing may indicate misalignment, too low tension or worn pulleys.

Answers to typical questions

Conti Synchroflex T2.5 160: what does the pitch length of 160 mm mean?

The pitch length is the nominal length measured in the belt cord line where the steel cord tension elements are located. It is not the same as a random outer circumference measurement. For this belt, 160 mm pitch length corresponds to 64 teeth with a 2.5 mm tooth pitch.

Conti Synchroflex T2.5 160: can the belt run with counter-bending?

The possibility depends on the profile, cord design, the diameter of the rollers and the specific belt routing. Counter-bending increases the bending load and must be included in the dimensioning. A roller on the belt back must have sufficient diameter and be positioned so that tooth engagement and grooveing are not impaired.

Conti Synchroflex T2.5 160: what is the difference between T2.5 and a GEN III belt?

This product is the standard version. GEN III is a separate reinforced series with red high-performance PU and denser, two-filament steel cord. The same profile and length therefore do not mean that the products are identical.

Conti Synchroflex T2.5 160: how best to store a spare timing belt?

Store the belt in a dry, clean place away from direct sunlight, ozone, strong heat or chemical fumes. It should be free from sharp bends and without heavy loads on top. Avoid hanging a small belt over a sharp hook as this can cause local deformation.

Conti Synchroflex T2.5 160: what should be checked after the first run-in?

Check that the belt runs centrally, that there is no abnormal heat or noise, and that the edges are not constantly rubbing against the flanges. Also look for signs of too low or too high pretension. If the drive requires a re-tension check, the machine manufacturer's procedure must be followed.

Conti Synchroflex T2.5 160: what does the steel cord mean for the function of the belt?

The steel cord tension members absorb the longitudinal tensile load and provide high longitudinal stiffness. This helps maintain pitch and position during operation. The cord must not be kinked, exposed or damaged during installation, as local damage can weaken the belt.

Conti Synchroflex T2.5 160: when should the timing belt pulleys be replaced?

Pulleys should be evaluated if the tooth grooves are worn, sharp, crooked or damaged. A new belt on worn pulleys may have poor load distribution and short life. Also check flanges for bars and side contact and the grooves for foreign objects.

The product in brief

The product brings together the specified T2.5 profile and length on one side, so that the appropriate width can be selected without creating a separate item for each cut. The main technical data is 160 mm pitch length and 64 teeth. If in doubt about load or pulley compatibility, the drive should be calculated before ordering the belt.
